Preventative Care

Preventive Health Care

Physical Examination

Preventative medicine is the best way to keep your pet happy and healthy for many years. Our pets age five to seven years every calendar year, making physical exams an important part of the early detection of health problems. Main Street recommends that adult pets (1-7 yrs) receive annual physical examinations and that senior pets (7+ yrs) receive a thorough physical examination every six months.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations prevent potentially deadly diseases like parvovirus in dogs and panleukopenia in cats. Vaccine recommendations are based on an individual assessment of each dog or cat’s need, guided by a conversation between you and one of our veterinarians.

Microchipping

Collars and identification tags are easily lost. A microchip is a form of permanent identification to ensure that you are reunited with your pet in the unfortunate circumstance that he or she is lost. A microchip is injected under the skin using a hypodermic needle. It is no more painful than a typical injection, although the needle is slightly larger than those used for vaccinations. No surgery or anesthesia is required—a microchip can be implanted during a routine office visit. If your pet is already under anesthesia for a procedure such as spaying or neutering, the microchip can often be implanted while they’re still under anesthesia.

Parasite Prevention & Heart Worm Testing

Let’s face it: Our pets are hosts for numerous unwanted guests suck as heartworms, intestinal parasites (roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, whipworms), and external parasites (fleas and ticks). In the state of North Carolina, monthly heartworm prevention is recommended year-round. Most heartworm preventatives also contain dewormers that prevent intestinal parasites. Due to the different lifestyles of our pets, there are numerous heartworm, flea, and tick preventatives available. Please ask one of our staff members which product best suits your pet’s needs. Heartworm disease is a potentially life-threatening illness and is all too common in North Carolina. Early detection through annual testing can save an animal’s life. Main Street has the ability to test for heartworms and can provide you results in less than 15 minutes.

Wellness Blood Testing

Annual blood testing enables the early detection of many diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, and leukemia. Early intervention can allow us to slow or stop the progression of these diseases.

Nutrition

Did you know that keeping your pet at a healthy weight is one of the most important things that you can do to keep them healthy? Studies have shown proper nutrition can extend an animal’s life and delay the onset of symptoms for chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis. Selecting a pet food can be overwhelming. There are many diets available, all of which claim to have specific advantages. We can offer expert advice to help you choose the best food for your beloved pet. Our nutritional counseling also includes determining how many calories your pet needs and converting that number into cups of food per day (allowing some wiggle room for snacks, of course!).
