Fear Free Veterinary Care: Reducing Pet Anxiety and Stress at the Vet

Fear Free Is Not Just for Pets

While our focus is on reducing Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) for our patients, Fear Free care benefits everyone involved. Veterinary visits can be stressful for pets, their family, and our team. Animals are very aware of fear and tension, and stressful experiences at the vet can build over time. Fear Free techniques help create a calmer, more supportive environment so each visit feels easier than the last.

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference

There is a lot happening behind the scenes to help your pet feel more comfortable, including:

  • Offering treats early and often during visits. Calories do not count at the vet.

  • Using pre-visit pharmaceuticals (PVPs) or basket muzzles when needed. These tools are never for “bad” pets. They help make overwhelming days more manageable. A calm or sleepy pet is always better than a stressed one.

  • Providing a coffee bar and drinks for clients is especially helpful for those early morning appointments.

Less Stress Means Better Care

When pets are stressed, it can affect more than just their mood. Stress can impact:

  • Bloodwork values

  • Accurate weights if a pet cannot comfortably stay on the scale

  • How much we are able to accomplish during a visit

  • How difficult it can be to get cats into carriers or dogs into the building

Reducing stress helps us provide better, more accurate care for your pet.

We Have Options

Every pet is different, and we are happy to adjust our approach to meet their needs. Options may include:

  • Exams outside in the yard or with your pet sitting on the bench with you

  • Baskets for cats to hide in

  • Warm towels to keep cats cozy

  • Yoga mats and non slip surfaces on exam tables

  • Soft blankets and multiple types of treats

  • Calling ahead if your pet is uncomfortable around other dogs

  • Helping clients who prefer not to see blood or needles during procedures

Using the Senses to Create Calm

Veterinary hospitals can be busy and noisy, so we take steps to create a more soothing atmosphere. We use calming diffusers and gentle scents in the lobby and exam rooms, along with Feliway and Adaptil products for cats and dogs. We also provide extra beds and blankets for comfort and quiet areas for pets who stay with us during the day.

Fear Free Is a Lifestyle

Fear Free care does not stop when you leave the hospital. At Main Street Veterinary, we care about your pet’s comfort at home too. Whether your pet struggles with storms, daily anxiety, or stressful situations, we are here to help. Fear Free is a lifestyle that supports your pet’s well being every day.
