Canine Influenza

April 30, 2015

We have had a lot of questions recently about the canine flu outbreak in Chicago. Please refer to the website below provided by the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dogs at highest risk are those in areas with diagnosed cases and those dogs with close contact to other dogs such as in boarding or doggie daycare.

There is a canine vaccine that was produced several years ago for a different strain of the canine flu. This vaccine has not been shown to cross protect against the new strain, however is thought to decrease the severity of the illness once the dog has contacted the canine flu. Vaccinated dogs that become infected develop less severe illness and are less likely to spread the virus to other dogs.

Unfortunately, due to increased demand, the vaccine is currently backordered and not available. Once the vaccine is available to us we will provide it to our canine patients who are at risk. Please call if any questions.
