Preventative medicine is the best way to keep your pet happy and healthy for many years. Our pets age five to seven years evey calendar year, making physical exams an important part in early detection of health problems. Main Street recommends that adult pets (1-7 yrs) receive annual physical examinations and that senior pets (7+ yrs) receive a thorough physical examination every six months.
Vaccinations prevent potentially deadly diseases like parvovirus in dogs and panluekopenia in cats. Vaccine recommendations are based on an individual assessment of each dog or cat’s need, guided by a conversation between you and one of our veterinarians.
Collars and identification tags are easily lost. A microchip is a form of permanent identification to ensure that you are reunited with your pet in the unfortunate circumstance that he or she is lost. A microchip is injected under the skin using a hypodermic needle. It is no more painful than a typical injection, although the needle is slightly larger than those used for vaccinations. No surgery or anesthesia is required—a microchip can be implanted during a routine office visit. If your pet is already under anesthesia for a procedure such as spaying or neutering, the microchip can often be implanted while they’re still under anesthesia.
